For 19-year-old Desiree Depass, it was the second time luck, when she walked away with the Miss Jamaica (World) 1999 crown on Saturday night.
Two years ago Desiree was a travel consultant, watched three other beauties sail passed her in that contest, but Saturday night in the ballroom of Le Meridien Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, she reigned supreme.
Wearing the sash “Miss Ponds” she was among the crowd favorites, drawing loud applause. And many could be heard saying she was “destined to win.”
Standing 5ft. 6in. tall, the woman who will represent Jamaica in the 1999 Miss world Pageant weighed 126 lbs. and has vital statistics of 34-25-37.
Desiree chose well when she selected a fabulous red satin gown, her tantalizing walk down the stage easily sets her apart from the other, who were grouping at their dresses and seemed very uncomfortable.
As if that was not enough to sate the appetite of the adoring audience, when Desiree answered the question: “What opportunities would you like to see for young people in Jamaica?” by saying she would establish a financial policy for young Jamaicans to access loans at lower interest rates, her fans were ecstatic.
Desiree’s answer went perfectly with her main aim of promoting a healthy family life, including addressing the plight of the less fortunate and ‘becoming a voice on their behalf’, an answer that had her in our ‘top three’ slot long before the final verdict was announced.
Flair caught up with the glowing Desiree after her crowning. Between several photographic moments the winner gushed, “there are no words to describe how I feel”.
Desiree admits she was very confident this year as she had done previously. Luck was also on her side as she happened to choose the perfect question.
A graduate of Immaculate Conception Preparatory and High schools, Desiree enjoys traveling, singing, cycling and meeting people, watching movies, singing and dancing. She spent seven years with the Cathi Levy players and recently danced for two months with the world-reknowned Danza Contemporanea de Cuba.
The proud mother of the queen had this to say, “Desiree worked hard, I think she has it in her to do a fantastic job, as she has been designing pageants from age 5-6 and was always a winner, we could all see it coming.
