Cindy Breakspeare first appeared on the Beauty Contest scene in August 1976 and in just over beauty queen in our nations history. She literally took Jamaica and then the world by storm in that short period establishing herself as a household name.
Her first contest in August was the “Miss Jamaica Body Beautiful” in which she represented Spartan Health Club, where she was a physical instructress. At 5 feet 6 inches, with vital statistics of 35-24-36 and her statuesque beauty, Cindy swamped her rivals and was the undeclared winner with the crowd long before the official announcement.
Next Cindy entered the “Miss Universe Bikini” Contest on September 18th in London which she reportedly won by a unanimous verdict from the judges.
Cindy’s outstanding looks and performance in the “Miss Universe Bikini” prompted the suggestion that she should take part in the “Miss World” in November. Mainly through the efforts of Mr. Oscar Heidenstam, organizer of the “Miss Universe Bikini” her entry was arranged.
With 60 contestants taking part in the “Miss World”, Cindy competed in what was up that time, one of the largest ever Contest and once again she was able to take the main prize. Of her victory Cindy expressed “great surprise” but of course she was most overjoyed at winning. She said she viewed the contest rather like applying for a job which you don’t really expect to get. She was very happy to have gotten the “job” of being “Miss World” for one year and for her it was a very exciting and informative one which she had thoroughly enjoyed.
