Mandevillites reign supreme at the MJW 2009 Sports Fast Track Competition THE Miss Jamaica World pageant is not just about physical beauty and brains, but about the total self of each finalist. The contestants must have stamina and strength of character to carry out their duties which includes visiting various functions, meeting and greeting various public figures and assisting in building and positioning brand Jamaica. To fulfill and ensure that criteria the Miss Jamaica World contestants tested their mettle in the grueling Miss Jamaica World Sports competition held on August 12 at the Spartan Health Club. The girls competed in a fitness competition. This fitness regime had three components, chin ups, bench press and spinning. The competition started out with the girls participating in numerical order under the watchful eyes and instructions of the Spartan team of personal trainers. The girls were required to do as many chin ups as they possibly could followed by bench presses and then spin. The chin-ups and bench press segments were to test the girls’ strength capacity and the spinning to test their endurance levels. The girls were tested on “spin” cycles to see who could complete the farthest distance within a 15 minutes time frame. This fast track competition as with the other fast track competitions secures the winner a place in the top ten at the grand coronation show at the Jamaica Pegasus on August 22. Participating in this competition more than any of the other fast track competitions showed the togetherness and spirit of the 18 contestants. They had no problem encouraging and cheering on each to do the maximum reps possible. However at the end of the day it was a western clean sweep for the top three positions. Showing their athletic skills were 1st Place, Calee Scharschmdt – Miss Mandeville Orthodontic and Miss Jamaica Western Queen who sported her way to the title by doing 29 chin ups, 29 bench presses and spinning for 5.5 miles; 2nd Place, Anna lee Williams, Miss Grace Instant Soy Porridge – 25 chin ups, 24 bench presses and 4.7 miles completed and tying for 3rd Place were Gillian Chen, Miss Tashamay’s Fashions and Samantha Shaw, Miss Foska Oats. Gillian completing 22 chin ups, 23 bench presses and spun for 5.3 miles, Samantha did 21 chin ups, 27 bench presses and spun for 4.7 miles. According to the 2009 MJW Fast Track Sports winner, she accredited her victory to sheer determination and the ‘cheering on’ by the other contestants
